Maybe It’s Not a Weak Muscle: Understanding Higher-Level Coordination Problems
When something feels unstable, painful, tight, disconnected, or difficult to control, we often reach for the simplest explanation:
That muscle must be weak, right?
Sometimes that is true….
But sometimes you can strengthen the supposedly “weak” muscle for months and still feel like something is missing.
You do the clamshells for your hips to stabilize your knees, you stretch your hip flexors and do the bridges to fix your anterior pelvic tilt. You do the rows, the band pull parts, and the upper back extensions to lift your forward head. You do the core exercises to alleviate your lower back pain . You stretch the tight thing. You strengthen the weak thing.
And somehow your body still doesn’t quite know what to do with itself.
That’s when I start wondering whether we’re dealing with something bigger than an individual muscle.
A muscle doesn’t work by itself
Your nervous system doesn’t experience movement as a collection of isolated muscles.
When you reach for something, walk across the room, turn your head, squat, breathe, or get up from the floor, your brain has to coordinate an enormous amount of information simultaneously.
Where is my head in space?
Where is my ribcage relative to my pelvis?
Where is my weight going through my feet?
How much pressure do I need inside my trunk?
Which joints should move?
Which ones should stay relatively quiet?
How much force is appropriate?
And in what order should all of this happen?
The muscle contraction is almost the end of the story.
Before that contraction can be useful, your nervous system needs a reasonably accurate map of your body and a strategy for organizing it.
That’s what I mean by a higher-level coordination problem.
The muscle may be capable. Your body may just not know how to use it.
A muscle can test perfectly strong and still be difficult for you to access during movement.
You might be able to produce plenty of force with your hamstrings on a machine, for example, while barely feeling them during a bridge.
Your glutes may be technically strong, yet your low back takes over every time you extend your hip.
Your abdominal muscles may be perfectly capable of contracting, but the second you attempt a challenging exercise your neck, hip flexors, or back dominate instead.
In situations like these, adding more strength isn’t necessarily the first thing the body needs.
Sometimes the system needs better organization.
Change the position of the pelvis and suddenly the hamstrings appear.
Change how the ribs are moving and suddenly the abdominal wall becomes much easier to feel.
Give the feet clearer pressure against the floor and suddenly the hips organize differently.
Change the relationship between the head, jaw, neck, and ribcage and suddenly breathing or trunk movement becomes easier.
Nothing magical happened to the muscle in those few seconds.
It didn’t suddenly become stronger.
Your nervous system simply found a better way to access what was already there.
This is why “activation exercises” can be confusing
People often describe this experience by saying a muscle finally “turned on.”
That language is useful, but muscles generally aren’t literally turned off.
A better way of thinking about it might be:
The muscle became available within the movement strategy.
That distinction matters.
Because if we believe the problem is simply that the muscle is weak, the answer will always be more strengthening.
But if the muscle is being excluded because the body is poorly organized around it, repeatedly loading the same dysfunctional strategy may simply make that strategy stronger.
You become very good at performing the exercise without actually solving the problem you were trying to solve.
Your body chooses strategies, not perfect anatomy
The body is extraordinarily adaptable.
When it needs stability or a way to accomplish a task, it will find one.
Maybe you stabilize your pelvis by gripping your lower back.
Maybe you create abdominal tension by pulling your ribs down aggressively.
Maybe you hold your head by tightening the front of your neck.
Maybe you stabilize your hips by turning your feet out.
Maybe you create shoulder stability by squeezing your shoulder blades together.
These compensations may begin subtly, outside of your awareness, and sometimes largely outside of your conscious control. Your nervous system finds a strategy that gets the job done, and if it works well enough, that strategy can become habitual.
But habitual does not mean optimal.
A compensation that is repeated often enough can become your default. Over time, it may overload certain tissues, restrict movement elsewhere, and make other muscles and joints harder to access. A chronically held twist, brace, grip, shift, or collapse is not something we simply want to accept because the body found a way to function around it.
Once we bring awareness to the pattern, we can begin training other ways of organizing the body.
At first, the new strategy may require a lot of concentration. You may have to deliberately find your hips instead of gripping your lower back, reconnect to your feet, reorganize your ribcage, or change how you are holding your head and neck.
With repetition, though, the new strategy becomes easier to access.
You begin to notice the old pattern sooner. You become better at reconnecting to the new one. What initially required intense focus starts to feel more natural.
And eventually, you do not have to consciously think about it nearly as much.
The better-trained strategy begins to become the nervous system’s new default.
That is the goal: not to micromanage your body forever, but to use awareness and repetition to replace a limiting compensation with a more functional way of organizing yourself.
Sometimes changing one thing changes everything
One of the most fascinating things about movement work is that the thing creating the biggest change isn’t always located where the symptoms are.
You may work on the foot and suddenly feel the hip.
You may change release tension in the tongue and suddenly the neck relaxes.
You may organize the ribcage and suddenly the shoulder blades glide like butter and your shoulder mobility is available.
You may change pressure through the hands and suddenly the abdominal wall becomes obvious.
This is why I’m increasingly cautious about reducing movement problems to statements like:
“Your glute med is weak.”
“Your core isn’t firing.”
“Your hip flexors are tight.”
Those statements may describe part of what we’re seeing.
But they don’t necessarily explain why it is happening.
And the why is often much more interesting.
Strength still matters
None of this means strength training is unnecessary.
Strength is incredibly important.
Once your body has access to a useful movement strategy, loading it is one of the best ways to make that strategy more durable.
But there’s an important difference between:
strengthening a muscle
and
teaching your nervous system how to organize your body so that muscle can participate.
Ideally, we do both.
And sequence matters.
If a person cannot sense their pelvis, cannot control their ribcage, cannot differentiate their hip from their spine, and cannot tell where their weight is going through their feet, adding heavier resistance may not solve the underlying problem. It may make it worse.
That’s why I always teach through the 3Cs: Concentration → Connection → Control.
First we concentrate enough to notice how we are organizing our body.
Then we connect our mind to our body.
Then we move with control under increasing demands (resistance, range, complexity, speed, balance).
Before asking the body to produce more force, we make sure it actually understands the movement!
How do you know you might be dealing with a coordination problem?
One clue is inconsistency.
You can do something easily one day and struggle with it the next.
A tiny change in position suddenly gives you dramatically more strength.
Touching a wall, pushing into a ball, changing foot pressure, or adjusting your breathing immediately changes what muscles you can feel.
Another clue is that you’ve already strengthened the area extensively without much improvement in the actual movement problem.
And perhaps the biggest clue is this:
When your body finds the right organization, multiple things improve at once.
Your breathing gets easier.
Your sense of the ground and balance improves.
Your neck relaxes and shoulders sit right.
Your hips feel stronger, clearer.
Your movement becomes quieter and more flowing, less effortful and compressed.
Your range of motion increases without forcing it.
That usually tells me we’re looking at more than one weak muscle.
We’re looking at a system that just found a better strategy.
Look at the system before blaming the muscle
Sometimes a muscle really is weak. Sometimes a tissue really is tight.
But those findings don’t always explain why the problem is happening.
When multiple areas seem weak, overactive, tight, or difficult to access, it may be worth looking upstream at the larger coordination strategy—particularly how the trunk, pelvis, hips, breath, and head and neck are organizing together.
A muscle can only work within the system it belongs to.
So before endlessly strengthening the part that appears to be failing, ask a bigger question:
Does the body have a well-organized foundation from which that muscle can actually do its job?
Sometimes that is where the real problem—and the real change—begins.
